This summer I was an intern for Representative Chris Stewart in his Washington D.C. office. The internship duties included: attending hearings that my legislator is a part of or involved in, helping legislative assistants with research on specific projects, responding to constituent mail, and tracking legislation. I also helped sort mail, meet and greet constituents, guided Capitol tours, answered telephones, and worked on other assignments as needed. I was also able to meet many different people around Washington and learn better networking as well as communication skills. Specifically the Chief of Staff in Rep. Stewart's office, Brian Steed, and Legislative Director, Gordon Larson, gave me pointers on law school, having both received their J.D.'s in the past. I lived near D.C. in Virginia and traveled to and from work each day on the D.C. Metro. This was a paid internship, both the office of the legislator I worked for as well as the Leavitt Center here at SUU payed me for the time I spent in D.C. This helped me pay for the cost of living as well as all of the activities I was able to experience. Overall this was a good step for me on my path to preparing for law school and learning more about the Federal Government.
